As you go through the checkout stand and swipe your credit card, you may not realize it but you just experienced POS software. POS (Point of Sale) is the software version of a checkout checker. It is a database driven program that takes your stored personal information, including the credit card you have on file, and automatically debits the amount of the sale out of your bank account.
Now, the advantage of this system is a much quicker checkout and no need for you to carry as much cash as you did before. The drawback is that this new system will cost jobs. This is the price of progress. As we, the consumers, are able to shop that much faster, we will be going through more automated checkout stands and more and more people will lose their jobs as a result. One day you have to hope that there will be other ways to save jobs as well.
